What is the history of Fort Bend, Texas?

Fort Bend was originally a defending fortification built in 1822 at the bend of the Brazos River, erected to defend against Indian raids. Soon, the population grew in the fort’s surroundings, and this location became critical during the Texas Revolution.

By 1837, the community established Fort Bend to represent “the fort at the bend” as the center of the community’s activity. Then later, the city of Richmond, Texas, was selected as the county seat, but the relevance of the first settlement in the fort remains in the county’s name.
